Nomination of Judge Darrin Gayles Sent to Senate Floor for Final Vote
May 8, 2014 by Robin Maril, Senior Legislative Counsel
This morning the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to send the nomination of Judge Darrin Gayles to the Senate floor for a final vote. Judge Gayles is nominated to serve on the federal bench in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. An out, gay man, Judge Gayles currently sits on the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida in Miami, where he serves on its civil court. If confirmed, Gayles would be the first openly gay black male Federal judge. HRC commends Judge Gayles for his courage to live as an out public servant, and looks forward to welcoming Judge Gayles to the Federal bench.
