NM Supreme Court Is All Ears Today

Post submitted by Leigh Durham, HRC field organizer

I, along with dozens of other New Mexicans, made the trip to the State Supreme Court today, gathering outside in the chilly early morning hours over coffee and donuts, excited and hopeful for what this historic day will come to represent. Those who couldn't make it to Santa Fe tuned in to a livestream on their computers, patiently listening at viewing parties, work and home, even in their cars as a live broadcast played across the FM dial. Family and friends of the six plaintiff couples, recently married gay and lesbian couples, allies and activists from across the state have come together to create a powerful statement reminding the Justices that New Mexicans stand for equality.

The oral arguments, lasting from approximately 9 a.m. to noon MST, have been split in to two parts: the legal interpretation of current statutes and the constitutionality of such laws. The Supreme Court recently issued a statement clarifying that they will not issue a ruling from the bench and a decision could follow any time after today's hearing.

It's been a whirlwind few months, and an arduous journey for the local community organizers and organizations who have been fueling this movement for years, and I'm lucky to be a part of it. It's been thrilling to watch loving couples in eight counties statewide make history and finally see their commitment to each other legally recognized. Now I stand in solidarity with marriage supporters and wait, both moved and energized by all of those around me, for the day when we can celebrate a decision that upholds the equality we all deserve.

HRC is proud to partner with Equality New Mexico, ACLU of NM, Freedom to Marry and ProgressNow NM to celebrate this momentous day in New Mexico's history!
