New York State Senate Considering Bill to Protect Youth from Conversion Therapy
June 17, 2014 by HRC staff
Post submitted by Alison Gill, HRC Senior Legislative Counsel
Yesterday, the New York State Assembly passed AB 6983 with bipartisan support. This important bill will protect youth under the age of 18 in New York from dangerous and discredited conversion therapy. Now the New York State Senate is considering this critical legislation. Although the New York legislative session ends on Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos still has the opportunity to bring the bill to a floor vote. We urge you to contact him so that we can ensure that youth in New York are protected from these harmful practices, which can lead to depression, anxiety, drug use, and suicide.
If passed, New York will join New Jersey and California, which have similar laws in place to protect youth. The Human Rights Campaign will testify in favor of similar legislation in the District of Columbia on June 27th.
