New Republic Interview: Obama is Not Pleased
January 28, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Senior Digital Strategist
In an interview with New Republic, President Barack Obama spoke frankly about the momentum toward equality for LGBT Americans, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal and his impatience with Republicans.
On Republicans struggle to side with the majority of Americans who support LGBT equality:
I suspect, for example, that already there are some Republicans who embrace the changing attitudes in the country as a whole around LGBT issues and same-sex marriage. But there's a big chunk of their constituency that is going to be deeply opposed to that, and they're going to have to figure out how they navigate what could end up being divisions in their own party. And that will play itself out over years.
On "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" Repeal:
There were advocates in the LGBT community who were furious at me, saying, "Why don't you just sign with a pen ordering the Pentagon to do this?" And my argument was that we could build a coalition to get this done, that having the Pentagon on our side and having them work through that process so that they felt confident they could continue to carry out their missions effectively would make it last and make it work for the brave men and women, gays and lesbians, who were serving not just now but in the future.”
The majority of Americans – about 53 percent – support marriage equality, according to a number of nonpartisan polls.
Additionally, according to an HRC analysis, the number of contributors who gave in support of marriage equality during the 2013 election was 13 times greater – about 133,000 compared to an estimated 10,500 - than those giving financial resources to oppose marriage equality.
Marriage equality and the ability to have our relationships recognized as equal under the law is a hallmark of the LGBT movement. HRC is working at the federal and state level to make true equality a reality. Stand with a majority of Americans in support of marriage equality with HRC’s Americans for Marriage Equality.
