New Poll Sets Record for Marriage Equality Support in New York
April 11, 2011
A new poll from the Siena Research Institute puts support for marriage equality in New York at 58%, the highest in the state's history. New York is one of many states fighting for the right of same-sex couples to legally marry. We're now at a point where barely 36% of New Yorkers oppose marriage equality and it's time the leaders in Albany stand up for what's right and legalize marriage for same-sex couples.
Brian Ellner, HRC's senior strategist for the campaign for New York Marriage said of the poll results: "The more New Yorkers learn about marriage equality, the more they support this basic issue of fairness. We will continue our campaign to educate across the state so that everyone has the right to make a commitment and build a family with the person they love."
HRC’s Campaign for New York Marriage includes more than a dozen field organizers across the state, amplifying the grassroots voices of New Yorkers for Marriage Equality. The campaign also has garnered media attention through video testimonials from high-profile New Yorkers who support the right of same-sex couples to marry. To date, HRC has released videos from Bill Bratton and Rikki Klieman, Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, former mayors Dinkins and Koch, Russell Simmons, Mark and Sunrise Ruffalo, John Slattery, Joan Rivers, Barbara Bush, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, Fran Drescher, Moby, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, Julianne Moore and Kenneth Cole – with more to follow in the coming weeks and months.
