New Mexico Unites for Marriage Campaign Kicks Off Tonight
November 7, 2013 by Guest contributor
Today is an exciting day in New Mexico, as the New Mexico Unites for Marriage campaign officially launches! HRC is proud to be a founding member of the broad and diverse coalition of local and national organizations, business and civic leaders, communities of faith and everyday New Mexicans who want to secure and protect marriage equality.
NM Unites for Marriage organized a press event to celebrate the campaign launch in Albuquerque’s downtown Civic Plaza, which included honorary campaign co-chairs, former NM Gov. Gary Johnson and U.S. Congresswoman Michelle Lujan-Grisham, in a truly bipartisan display of support. Remarks were also made by ACLU of NM Executive Director Peter Simonson, Equality New Mexico Executive Director Amber Royster, Father Thomas Arrowsmith-Lowe. of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Alamogordo, Taos Mayor Darren Cordova and NM Supreme Court case plaintiff couple Miriam Rand and Ona Lara Porter. New Mexicans from all walks of life shared their stories and explained why marriage mattered to them.
"This is about equality. This state and this country are about liberty for everybody - not just some people," said former Gov. Gary Johnson. We couldn't agree more!
As we wait on a decision on marriage equality from the state’s highest court, we know that even with a victory for equality, we must be prepared to block any legislative attempts to deny or restrict those freedoms in the upcoming session. New Mexico Unites for Marriage will mobilize activists and allies across the state to communicate directly with their legislators in the coming months to let them know why marriage matters for all New Mexicans.
