New Mexico GOP Hopeful Slams Marriage Equality
October 22, 2012 by HRC staff
This post comes from HRC Communications Intern Nick Gumas:
New Mexico GOP Congressional hopeful Heather Wilson blasted marriage equality in a recent debate with Congressman Martin Heinrich last week. HRC has endorsed Heinrich for re-election.
When asked directly about marriage equality, Wilson came out against marriage for loving, committed same-sex couples, and justified her opposition by claiming the reason “is the potential for children. I mean, children don't mature for almost two decades … they can't fend for themselves and anybody who's worked with children who don't have an intact family knows that they're much more likely to be in trouble with the law, they're much more likely to have trouble in school, they're much more likely to be parents before they're adults themselves…”
Fortunately, Democrat Martin Heinrich stood up for equality. He answered: “I believe in the eyes of the constitution and in the eyes of the government everyone has equal rights. I was proud to be one of the people who worked to overturn ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.’”
Check out the video of the exchange.
HRC is proud to support Martin Heinrich in his bid to become the next senator representing New Mexico. Help support Congressman Heinrich and the movement towards equality by donating to his campaign.
