New Mexico Catholic Bishops Mum on Marriage Equality

On Wednesday, New Mexico's three Catholic Bishops met with legislators in Santa Fe, weighing in on proposed legislation and the issues they want to see resolved in the 2014 legislative session. To the surprise of some, there was no mention of marriage for same-sex couples. Nor did the Bishops raise the NM Supreme Court ruling that brought marriage equality to the Land of Enchantment in December.
Instead, the Bishops focused on the importance of early-childhood education and driver's licenses for immigrants. A spokesperson for the Bishops did state that they would “likely” support the constitutional amendment introduced by Sen. Bill Sharer banning marriage equality, but that it “was not a priority.” In September, Pope Francis criticized the Catholic hierarchy for their “obsession” with LGBT issues and urged them to strike a “new balance” to make the Church a merciful, more welcoming place for all, including LGBT people.
This promising sign comes only weeks after Republican Governor Susana Martinez publicly stated that she would not push for legislation that goes against the Court decision, indicating a larger shift in opinion from many former opponents of marriage equality.
Nationally, 54 percent of American Catholics support same-sex marriage, according to a 2013 Quinnipiac University poll.
