New Marriage Coalition Video: “As Americans, We Believe in Freedom”
February 22, 2013 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
The Respect for Marriage Coalition is out with a new ad demonstrating the broad and diverse support for marriage equality. The ad features Craig Stowell, a military veteran and Republican who lives with his wife in New Hampshire. Craig’s younger brother Calvin is gay – and Craig explains in the ad why that makes this issue so personal for him:
“Calvin was the best man at my wedding, and I want to be the best man at his. It’s only fair that Calvin has the freedom to marry the person he loves, too.”
HRC discovered the Stowell family in New Hampshire in 2011 – and since then Craig’s story has resonated among many different kinds of people, particularly Republicans. The Stowells regularly participate in HRC events to help advance marriage equality – both nationally and at the state level.

HRC is proud to partner with Freedom to Marry in co-chairing the Respect for Marriage Coalition. The Coalition includes more than 80 civil rights, faith, health, labor, business, legal, LGBT, student, and women’s organizations working together to end the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act and grow support for marriage equality.
Earlier this week, the Coalition released the results of a groundbreaking new poll that demonstrated increasing support across party lines for marriage. The poll by Grove Insight showed that three-quarters of Americans believe it is a constitutional right to marry the person they love – including 75 percent of independents and 56 percent of Republicans.
