New Jersey Governor Corzine to be “happy governor” to sign marriage equality bill
February 25, 2009
From Northeast Regional Field Director Anthony Hayes:
The annual Greater NY Gala Dinner, held on February 7, was a night full of encouraging words from our top political leaders. In particular, New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, who was one of the speakers for the evening, earned several rounds of applause for reaffirming his commitment to the LGBT community.
HRC members Rob Neifer and Ron Rudolph, who helped educate and mobilize support for the recent court decision to allow Harriet Bernstein and Luisa Paster to have their commitment ceremony at the Pavilion in Ocean Grove, NJ, were among the dinner attendees who were thrilled to hear Corzine say:
...On November 4th, the people of the United States stood up and said, " We believe in that." And it's only a few folks that backed away in California on Proposition 8. And I want to tell you New Jersey is going to reverse that trend and we're going to move forward as we go forward with equality.... And you're going to have a happy governor signing a marriage equality bill when it gets to my desk.
Watch Gov. Corzine's entire speech:
Yes, there is much work to be done in 2009 in New Jersey. However, it is encouraging to know that Governor Corzine understands the importance of passing an inclusive ENDA and federal hate crimes bill and supports the right of gay and lesbian couples to marry in New Jersey.
