New Hampshire to hold hearings on LGBT-related bills
February 4, 2009
From the Advocate:
New Hampshire legislators are mulling two very different bills -- one that would build upon the state's civil union bill to legalize gay marriage, and one that would define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The state's House Judiciary committee will hold a hearing on both bills Thursday, according to the Associated Press. Reverend V. Gene Robinson, the Episcopal Church's first openly gay bishop, is slated to testify in favor the same-sex marriage bill sponsored by Rep. Jim Splaine. The bill that would ban gay marriage is being carried by GOP Rep. Leo Pepino. Other legislation regarding legal unions is also under consideration. One bill would make the protections afforded by civil unions accessible to straight couples and relatives of the same gender. Another would prohibit the state from recognizing same-sex marriages from other states as civil unions. (Advocate.com)
Allyson Robinson, our associate director of diversity, will also head up to New Hampshire tomorrow to testify before state lawmakers on legislation to add gender identity and expression to the state's non-discrimination statutes.
We'll have more updates on Allyson's testimony as available.
