New Attack Ad Targets President’s Support for Marriage Equality
September 4, 2012 by Dan Rafter, Online Campaigns Manager
A conservative super PAC is running a new anti-Obama ad that targets the President’s support for marriage equality. The ad, from the Campaign for American Values PAC, features a disgruntled woman who looks up from a newspaper and says: “Obama is trying to force gay marriage on this country. That’s not the change I voted for.”
What the ad appears to construe as “forcing gay marriage” is likely a reference to the President’s historic support for marriage equality for loving, committed same-sex couples. In announcing his support for marriage equality, the President both affirmed the dignity and respect of LGBT individuals, and reiterated the point that strong families – including those headed by same-sex couples – strengthen our nation, not weaken it.
In announcing his support, the President also joined the majority of Americans who support marriage equality.

The logic at play here appears to be similar to a bizarre video released earlier this summer by a self-proclaimed affiliate of Focus on the Family – in which the President’s support for marriage equality was equated to turning our country into a police state.
In fact, a growing number of Americans – including a number of prominent Republicans – join President Obama in supporting marriage equality. Check out this video HRC released with Freedom to Marry just last week:
