Several poll workers in Winston-Salem are reporting that the wife of NC Sen. Peter Brunstetter remarked yesterday that her husband sponsored Amendment One in an effort “to protect the Caucasian race.”
Freelance reporter Chad Nance paraphrased Jodie Brunstetter’s alleged remarks, as told to him by those who were present:
“During the conversation, Ms. Brunstetter said her husband was the architect of Amendment One, and one of the reasons he wrote it was to protect the Caucasian race. She said Caucasians or whites created this country. We wrote the Constitution. This is about protecting the Constitution. There already is a law on the books against same-sex marriage, but this protects the Constitution from activist judges.”
When Nance followed up with Brustetter about her alleged comments, she avoided the question and claimed to be confused, stating, “Right now I have some heat stroke going on…there has been lots of confusion. ” A full transcript of Nance’s follow-up is available here.
