Navratilova Set To Appear on Dancing with the Stars
February 29, 2012 by HRC staff
This post comes from HRC Communications Intern Matt Arnstine:
Former Grand Slam tennis champion Martina Navratilova has been named a contestant on ABC's hit show, "Dancing with the Stars.” Navratilova came out as lesbian in 1981 and joins a long list of openly LGBT contestants to make an appearance on the show. With Chaz Bono and Lance Bass among the former contestants, it’s heartening to see another openly LGBT celebrity included on one of the most-watched television shows in America.
Over the past three years, Martina has served as AARP’s Fitness Ambassador, engaging with both straight and LGBT seniors to promote fitness and overall good health. Martina is not only a champion on the tennis court, but is a leading LGBT activist. Back in 2000, Navratilova was honored with HRC's National Equality award. HRC congratulates Martina, and we wish her the best of luck on her dancing journey. Tune in to watch Martina compete on season 14 of “Dancing with the Stars," which premieres March 19 at 8pm on ABC.
