National LGBT Health Awareness Week: LGBT Health Resource Kit
March 29, 2012 by Tom Sullivan
In observance of 2012 National LGBT Health Awareness Week, the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency of the Federal Government, has released a set of resources on the topic of health issues for LGBT populations.
This resource is designed to equip healthcare providers, educators and substance-abuse prevention professionals with the most up-to-date information on health concerns of LGBT people. A companion slide presentation provides a basic educational tool on LGBT healthcare disparities and an overview of terms related to gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation. Both resources are free and available for download on the SAMHSA website.
The SAMHSA publication release coincides with the one-year anniversary of the landmark Institute of Medicine (IOM) report - The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People: Building a Foundation for Better Understanding. The IOM rightly identified the dearth in LGBT health research and has precipitated an increased focus on the subject matter. HRC’s Healthcare Equality Index has experienced increased interest over the past year, as well. If you are a healthcare administrator, you should add your name to the list for HEI updates and survey invitations.
HRC is a proud member of the National Coalition for LGBT Health which sponsors National LGBT Health Awareness Week.
