National Healthcare Decisions Day

Post submitted by Tom Sullivan, HRC Staff

National Healthcare Decisions Day is observed every year on April 16 with the goal of inspiring, educating and empowering the public and healthcare providers about the importance of advance healthcare directives. In times of emergency, you may be unable to make medical decisions or state who you want to visit you. That is why it is important to have these directives in place. Take a moment to learn about protecting your hospital visitation and decision-making rights.

If you’ve already taken the next step and actually had these legal documents drawn up, well done! Now, make sure to keep a file of your advance healthcare directives in a secure place at home and give copies to your primary care physician. However, extra copies at home and with your doctor does not mean you will have these documents available in an emergency.

Since quick access to these documents is especially important to the LGBT community, HRC has negotiated a discounted rate for HRC members for the services of DocuBank -- the nation’s largest electronic access service for healthcare directives. When you store your healthcare directives with DocuBank you receive a customized wallet card that makes these documents, and your critical emergency information, instantly available via automated fax or secure webpage.

HRC is a proud supporter of National Healthcare Decisions Day.
