National Education Association Hosts Dialogue on LGBT Issues
May 8, 2013 by Marty Rouse, National Field Director
This past Sunday I participated in a panel discussion at a meeting of the National Education Association’s LGBT affinity group about the importance of working on a range of LGBT issues in our nation’s schools. HRC and the NEA have had a longstanding partnership with our Welcoming School program. Through this program, we’ve been able to educate thousands of elementary school children and teachers on family diversity, avoiding stereotyping, and ending bullying.
We also discussed marriage equality, employment discrimination, and immigration reform. I was able to discuss what HRC’s Youth and Campus department is doing with our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Program. The program educates and organizes students, faculty, and administrators on HBCU campuses about LGBT issues. It also holds an annual summit of young leaders from these institutions in Washington to build stronger relations with other student from across the county and further to develop their leadership skills.
The other panelists were Mara Keisling, Executive Director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, Darren Phelps, National Executive Director of Pride at Work, and Adam Tenner, Executive Director of Metro TeenAIDS.
Thank you, NEA, for inviting us to be a part of your "Dialogue on LGBTQ Issues." Let’s keep the conversation going.
