NAACP Leaders Speak Out in Support of Marriage Equality in Maryland
October 16, 2012 by Marty Rouse, National Field Director
At NAACP National headquarters in Baltimore yesterday, NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous led a press conference to discuss NAACP's strong support for marriage equality.
It was powerful to see and hear NAACP national and state leadership united in support of Question 6. Each speaker drew the distinction between receiving a civil marriage license from City Hall and the protection that clergy receive to marry or not marry who they choose. Each also spoke about fairness and equality for all.
Jealous was joined by Maryland NAACP's State Conference President Gerald Stansbury, Baltimore City Branch President Tessa Hill Aston, Prince George's Branch President Bob Ross, Reverend Dr. Todd Yeary, Senior Pastor, Douglas Memorial Community Church, Baltimore, and NAACP Maryland Youth and College Division President Chizoba Ukairo.
Founded in 1909, the NAACP is our nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization.
