Mormon church reveals it plunked almost $200K into Prop 8
February 2, 2009
Compared to earlier LDS claims that the church spent just over $2,000 on Prop 8, church disclosure forms submitted Friday show that the Mormon church actually contributed closer to $190,000 to strip gay and lesbian couples of their right to marry in California. Still, that new figure doesn't even begin to paint the picture of how involved LDS church members were in Prop 8. Church members are thought to have contributed upwards of $20 million directly to the Yes on Prop 8 campaign. People on our side are continuing to demand answers regarding the legality of Prop 8. And marriage equality advocates have filed a complaint with the Fair Political Practices Commission to investigate whether the Mormon church broke the law through its involvement in Prop 8.
