Momentum in Delaware: GOP Rep. Supports Marriage Equality
April 19, 2013 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
Delaware GOP Rep. Mike Ramone supports marriage equality, and is signing on as a co-sponsor of HB 75. In announcing his support, Rep. Ramone said:
Gay people have become very close to us. We just don’t believe that they shouldn’t be treated equally like everyone else and have the opportunity to get married.
A number of Republicans nationwide are embracing marriage equality, at both the state and federal level. Recently, U.S. Senators Rob Portman and Mark Kirk said they believed loving, committed gay and lesbian couples should have the freedom to marry. In February, a number of prominent GOP voices filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court speaking out in favor of marriage equality.
Ramone also echoed an emerging theme among Republicans who back marriage equality: allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry and start a family is among the most foundational of conservative principles.
I’m a Republican because I believe in fiscal responsibility and trying to make the government a place that helps people build businesses and be successful, not because it tells us how we should socially live our lives.
Yesterday, the House Administration Committee approved HB 75 by a 4-1 vote, sending the legislation to the floor of the House. The Senate also is expected to hold hearings and a vote on the bill in the coming weeks. Gov. Jack Markell has vowed to sign it into law.
If you live in Delaware, it’s not too late to reach out to your lawmaker and encourage them to support marriage equality.
