Moldova Secretly Passed Anti-LGBT Propaganda Law

Earlier this month, Moldova quietly followed in the footsteps of Russia and Lithuania after politicians passed an anti-LGBT “propaganda” law, making illegal the distribution of public information about "any other relations than those related to marriage or family."

In order to avoid scrutiny, politicians discussed and amended the Contravention Code in secret and did not inform the public of its deliberations, according to European Parliament’s Intergroup on LGBT Rights.

Those found in violation of the law will face fines of up to 8,000 Leu, (about $628 dollars) and businesses or non-government organization could face possible suspension of activities for up to a year.

In June the European Commission for Democracy explained that so-called “anti-propaganda” laws breached European Convention on Human Rights, which is legally binding in Moldova.

Ukraine is currently debating passage of a similar law.
