‘Modern Family’ Honored by Catholic Media Group

The 11-time Emmy winning Modern Family can add another accolade to its list: the Television Award from Catholics in Media Associates.

Conservative groups have targeted the ABC comedy for featuring a loving and committed gay family, or even for acknowledging that gay people exist.

However, this award from a leading Catholic body sends a strong message that “family values” can incorporate all kinds of families, including LGBT ones.

CIMA president Haskell Vaughn Anderson III emphasized that the organization’s mission has never been “to criticize what we don't like, but to praise what we do." Past awards have gone to gay-friendly shows like Glee and Ugly Betty.

Despite the Catholic hierarchy’s heavy funding of NOM and other anti-LGBT campaigns, the majority of Catholics support marriage equality and other key protections for LGBT families.
