MN Party Leaders Join Together to Support Marriage Equality
April 10, 2013 by Trevor Chandler, Associate Regional Field Director
Today a broad coalition of political parties announced their strong support of marriage equality as legislation works its way through the Minnesota legislature. Party leaders from the Democratic, Libertarian, Independence, and Green Parties stood shoulder to shoulder calling on legislators to act this session, the Log Cabin Republicans are also a part of this impressive coalition.
Ken Martin, chair of the Democratic Farmer Labor Party (DFL) as it is called in Minnesota, started off the press event by saying, “The Minnesota DFL is proud to stand unified with a diverse group of political leaders urging the Minnesota Legislature and our Democratic majorities to make haste and extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples in 2013, and we will work diligently to ensure passage of this important legislation this year.”
The display of unity from across Minnesota’s political spectrum comes at a time when the MN House and Senate are expected to have floor votes in the coming few weeks. Committees in each chamber have already passed identical marriage bills earlier this year. Governor Mark Dayton has committed to signing the bill.”
Also speaking at the event was Bob Odden, Chair of the Minnesota Libertarian Party who said, “Regardless of political beliefs or identifications, Minnesotans believe in the inherent rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all Minnesotans. What could be more tantamount to the pursuit of happiness than being able to marry the person you love? The Libertarian Party is proud to work with Minnesotans United to end this unnecessary government intrusion into the personal lives of Minnesotans.”
HRC is a board member of Minnesotans United which has built an impressive coalition across party lines and with hundreds of organizations from across the state and country to work together to pass marriage equality in 2013.
HRC Regional Field Organizer Trevor Chandler has been in Minnesota for the past year working with the Minnesotans United campaign. He serves as Political Director of the campaign.
