Olivia Culpo, who stated her support for transgender rights during her successful run for Miss USA, has gone on to be crowned Miss Universe.

During the Miss USA pageant’s final interview round in June, Culpo was asked, “Would it be fair if a transgender woman won the Miss USA title?”

She responded: “I do think it would be fair… There are so many people who have a need to change for a happier life."

In April the Miss Universe Organization ruled that transgender contestants were eligible to compete following Jenna Talackova’s controversial disqualification and reinstatement in the Miss Universe Canada pageant.

Congratulations to Olivia, Jenna and those who continue to elevate the visibility – and advocate for the rights of – all transgender Americans.
