Minnesotans United for All Families at the Capitol

The following post comes from Leah Solo, Coalitions Committee Chair, Minnesotans United for All Families:
Last week, Minnesotans United for All Families, the campaign to defeat the anti-marriage constitutional amendment in Minnesota, was proud to be part of OutFront Minnesota’s Lobby Day of Action at the Minnesota Capitol. The decision to put the anti-marriage amendment on the ballot in Minnesota has already been made by the Minnesota Legislature. Since Minnesotans will be voting on the issue in November, instead of asking attendees to lobby their legislators to oppose the amendment, we focused our efforts on training attendees to lobby the people in their lives to Vote No on November 6.
At 7am, staff from MN United, OutFront Minnesota, and HRC gathered to prepare for the supporters, who would arrive shortly. As we made last minute preparations, the volunteers started pouring in, and we got to work motivating and training them. Throughout the day, we trained almost 500 supporters, committing many of them to take on leadership roles in their local communities.
In the middle of the day, we took a break from talking to legislators and training volunteers to rally! Kicking off the rally was our supportive Governor Mark Dayton. Other speakers were Pastor Kelly Chatman of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Javier Morillo from SEIU local 26, and Justin Anderson, an advocate for Safe Schools. Over 1,000 people attended the rally.
At the end of the day, volunteers and staff were energized and ready to defeat the anti-marriage amendment here in Minnesota. With a little over 7 months to go, this campaign is moving fast!
