Minnesota - The Race to the Finish Line
November 1, 2012 by Trevor Chandler, Senior Regional Field Organizer
There’s less than one week to go and the energy on the ground here in Minnesota is incredible.
Walking into an action center, you feel like you’re at Central Command. There are rows and rows of volunteers with headsets on computers calling voters to persuade, activate and get out to vote.
We have a tireless crew here who have been working for months preparing for this very moment. They have been putting in long days and nights they would have otherwise been spending with family and friends, but remaining resolutely dedicated to making sure that those same people don’t have their rights taken away by this hurtful and divisive constitutional amendment.
People often ask what it’s like to work on a campaign with the long hours, the constantly changing polls- the endless attacks from the other side; it’s hard for many to comprehend the physical and emotional exhaustion as well as exhilaration that you go through, especially when you are working on an issue as important as the fight for equal marriage rights.

As a runner, the immediate comparison that comes to mind is a marathon; 26.2 miles of pain and passion that seemingly goes on forever and tests your resolve in ways you have never experienced before. The campaign here in Minnesota over the last 18 months has not disappointed in that regard, and we are so close to the finish line. But as any marathoner will tell you, the first 26 miles may be tough, but it’s the last .2 where you prove your worth.
Minnesotans United for All Families, of which HRC is a proud coalition member, is hitting the last leg of the race with everything we’ve got. State fundraising records have been smashed and we have the largest organizing staff of any campaign in Minnesota history, as well as the most sophisticated GOTV effort the state has ever seen. In addition, we have an unprecedented coalition of religious leaders and congregations, businesses both big and small, Republicans, Independents, and Democrats, along with community and neighborhood organizations all working together with a common goal: Defeat this amendment.
Being one of HRC’s several staff on the ground the last 7 months and working with such an incredibly talented team has been an exciting privilege, and I look forward to crossing the finish line with them. But we can’t do it alone, we need you to volunteer, donate, and most importantly, vote. Join us as we cross that finish line and make history
HRC is a proud supporter of the coalition, Minnesotans United for All Families, working to defeat the amendment banning same-sex marriage in the state. HRC has set up a special fund – HRC Minnesota Family Freedom PAC – to direct 100 percent of your contribution to defeat the anti-marriage constitutional amendment in Minnesota.
