Miley Cyrus on Being a ‘True Christian’
February 6, 2012 by Carolyn Simon, Deputy Director of Digital Media
In the new issue of Glamour magazine, Miley Cyrus – the pop star who rose to fame on the Disney Channel sitcom Hannah Montana – pens an article about why she got a tattoo in support of marriage equality.
It was the Tweet shared ‘round the world – six months ago, Cyrus posted a photo of the tattoo on Twitter, proclaiming, “All LOVE is equal.” She took a lot of heat from her legions of loyal followers.
“A lot of people mocked me – they said, ‘What happened to you? You used to be a Christian girl!’ And I said, ‘Well, if you were a true Christian, you would have your facts straight. Christianity is about love,’” Cyrus writes.
Cyrus has a history of supporting the LGBT community – in addition to her supportive Tweets dating as far back as 2009, she has spoken out for equality in the mainstream media and posed for a photo with the NOH8 campaign.
In her Glamour article, Cyrus talks about the importance of changing laws as well as hearts and minds.
“I believe every American should be allowed the same rights and civil liberties,” she writes. “…This is America, the nation of dreams. We're so proud of that. And yet certain people are excluded. It's just not right.”
