Michael Fitzgerald One Step Closer to Becoming Federal Judge
November 3, 2011 by Ty Cobb, Director of Global Engagement
The Senate Judiciary Committee sent Michael Fitzgerald’s nomination to become a federal district court judge for the Central District of California to the Senate floor. The Committee approved Fitzgerald’s nomination by voice vote.
Fitzgerald is the first openly gay nominee for a district court seat in the Ninth Circuit, which primarily covers the West Coast. If confirmed by the Senate, Fitzgerald will join Judges Deborah Batts, Paul Oetken and Alison Nathan, who all serve in the Southern District of New York, to become the fourth openly LGBT federal judge with life tenure. Prior to the Obama administration, only one openly gay individual is considered to have been nominated and confirmed to a life-tenured seat – Judge Batts, a Clinton nominee.
