Melissa Harris-Perry Joins Athletes for Equality

MNSBC Host, Tulane Professor and LGBT Advocate Melissa V. Harris-Perry is the very latest addition to the Athletes for Equality team running in March’s Washington, D.C., Rock and Roll Half Marathon.

Fresh off Mardi Gras, the New Orleans resident is now part of a team of nearly 20 athletes, all pushing themselves physically to raise much needed funds to support the critical work of the HRC Foundation.  With just over one month to go, training is in full swing, as is the camaraderie among all those who are participating.

Joining Melissa on the team are Active Duty Marine Corps captain Matthew Phelps and his fiancé Ben Schock, who made history this past December as the first gay couple to get engaged at the White House.

Over the weekend she took a few minutes to discuss on MSNBC her participation in HRC’s Athletes for Equality program. Watch a clip of her remarks below.

“The race for justice is never over,” said Harris-Perry. “When you step out for equality, we all win.”

Mellissa Harris-Perry is a long time advocate for LGBT rights. Last year she joined HRC’s Americans for Marriage Equality, joining a cadre of politicians, civil rights leaders, and film and music celebrities in support of the rights of loving, committed same-sex couples.

Looking to keep up your new year’s resolution, or start anew?  We still are taking registrants for this year’s Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon, along with beginning to take RSVP’s for our team forming for October’s 38th annual running of the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC.  Each athlete commits to raising money for the work of HRCF, and receives coaching and fundraising support along the way.
