New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has come out in favor of marriage equality. Mayor Landrieu, who is a Catholic and a Democrat, has been a longtime supporter of civil unions. However, this is the first time he has endorsed same-sex marriage.
Mayor Landrieu’s name appeared on a statement from the U.S. Conference of Mayors supporting marriage equality.
“The mayor has long supported ending marriage discrimination at all levels of government,” Landrieu spokesman Tyler Gamble said in an e-mail to The Advocate. “As an employer, the city of New Orleans recognizes domestic partnerships and allows our employees’ partners to be eligible for benefits.”
There are currently three lawsuits in Louisiana challenging Louisiana’s constitutional amendment banning marriage equality. To find out more about the marriage equality landscape in Louisiana, click here.
