Mayor Julian Castro Appoints LGBT Liaison in San Antonio
January 16, 2013 by Karin Quimby, Regional Field Director
This past week San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro appointed an LGBT Liaison, Adam Greenup, to advise him on LGBT issues in the city. Adam also serves as a Senior Policy Advisor to the mayor. I had the pleasure of meeting with Adam last week and he let me know that Mayor Castro had read HRC’s Municipal Equality Index and saw ways for the city to boost its score, which is why he took immediate action to appoint an LGBT Liaison. The local San Antonio LGBT community and HRC are thrilled that Mayor Castro took this important step. And Adam didn’t waste any time beginning his outreach to the community. He stopped by a meeting of the HRC Steering Committee last week where everyone got to meet him and to thank the Mayor for his support of full LGBT equality.
It was a great opportunity for me to meet with members of the HRC San Antonio Steering Committee as well --to hear about the great work they are doing and to brief them on the work ahead in San Antonio to pass a fully-inclusive citywide nondiscrimination ordinance. In addition, I was able to meet with clergy and lay leaders in San Antonio who are members of the Progressive Religious Organization. They are prepared to do all they can to support the effort to pass the ordinance. San Antonio is a thriving city with a vibrant LGBT community.
