Massachusetts Newspaper Mocks Transgender Americans

The Lowell Sun ran a series of mock Christmas carols today, including one mocking transgender Americans and referencing Massachusetts’ transgender protections bill. That bill, signed into law last month, bars discrimination in the workplace and adds gender identity and expression to the commonwealth’s existing hate crime laws.
The offensive piece can be viewed in full on the Sun’s website. The column is set to the tune of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” and includes the lines:
Chaz Bono got turned into a man, dear.
Cher don't care but Sonny, he would grieve.
Now in Mass., some guy who's born as Adam
Can change his moniker to Christmas Eve.
The column comes at the same time ABC is planning to air a new comedy next month, “Work It,” that features two men who dress as women to secure employment.
It is unacceptable for transgender Americans, and the very real challenges they face, to become comedic punch lines – and we have an obligation to speak out against such dangerous stereotypes. E-mail the Lowell Sun now and share your disgust with them. To take action against ABC’s plans to air the offensive comedy “Work It,” sign our petition now.
