Marylanders for Marriage Equality participated in a Voter Empowerment Town Hall seminar hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s Upsilon Tau Omega chapter of Oxon Hill, MD. The town hall was attended by over 100 people on Saturday, September 22 at the Oxon Hill Library.
The seminar was designed to educate members of the community on the voting process and had a panel discussion on Question 6, the ballot referendum that will decide if Maryland’s marriage equality law will be upheld. HRC’s Donna Payne spoke on behalf of the Marylanders for Marriage Equality campaign and Robert Broadus from the opposition Protect Marriage Maryland testified against it.
The voter education session was given by Kurt Walters of Prince George’s County Board of Elections. The program also featured a panel discussion for Question 4, also known as the Maryland Dream Act, and other ballot referendums that voters will see on the November ballot.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority is the first Greek-lettered sorority established by African American college women over 100 years ago and highlights community engagement and education.
HRC has set up a special fund to direct 100 percent of your contribution today to defend the marriage equality law in Maryland. HRC is a founding member and leader of Marylanders for Marriage Equality, the coalition campaign working to defend marriage in the Free State, and your contribution will support the coalition's efforts and count toward your HRC membership.
