Maryland Sen. Rich Madaleno Introduces Transgender Rights Bill
January 16, 2014 by Cathryn Oakley, Legislative Counsel, State & Municipal Advocacy
On Monday, Maryland State Senator Rich Madaleno introduced the Fairness for All Marylanders Act of 2014. This bill would prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and expression in the areas of employment, housing, credit, and public accommodations.
Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Howard County, Montgomery County, and Hyattsville already have civil rights ordinances protecting transgender people from discrimination, but elsewhere in Maryland – and in 32 other states across the country it remains legal to fire someone simply because of their gender identity or expression.
HRC is a member of the Maryland Coalition for Trans Equality and is invested in the effort to advance equal rights for transgender and gender non-conforming people in Maryland.
Marylanders can support this critical legislation by making plans now to attend Lobby Day on the evening of Monday, February 17th.
