Marriage Victory in the Maryland State Senate!

Post submitted by Sultan Shakir, former HRC Director of Youth and Campus Engagement Program

Moments ago, the Maryland State Senate passed the Civil Marriage Protection Act by a vote of 25-21.

From our thousands of members across the state, thank you to Senate President Mike Miller, openly gay State Senator Rich Madaleno, bill sponsor Senator Ron Garagiola and State Senator Jamie Raskin for their strong leadership on this issue.

After years of hard work by our allies at Equality Maryland and others across the state, this bill moves one step closer to passage.

Tomorrow, the State House of Delegates will hold a hearing on their version of the bill. If tomorrow is anything like the Senate hearing, we can expect our opponents to demonize same-sex families and argue that the state of Maryland should continue dismissing the love and ignoring the commitment of same-sex couples.

If you live or know someone who lives in Maryland, please ask them to contact their State Delegate(s) now. To locate your legislators, visit
