Marriage Equality Support Continues to Soar Nationwide

Half of Americans – across race, party and class lines – believe the U.S. Constitution guarantees loving, committed same-sex couples the right to marry, according to a new Washington Post- ABC News poll.

According to the poll, support for marriage equality is at an all-time high of 59 percent.

Across the board, individuals surveyed answered with resounding support the rights of LGBT individuals, including in the workplace.

Seventy-eight percent believe gay and lesbian individuals can be as good as parents as straight people, and 61 percent favor allowing same-sex couples to adopt.

And 81 percent of those surveyed believe a business should not be allowed to refuse service to a gay or lesbian individual, regardless of the owner’s religious beliefs.

Though the overwhelming majorities of Democrats and Independents support marriage equality, Republican support is also building. According to today’s poll, 40 percent of Republicans support same-sex marriage.

Today’s Washington Post- ABC News poll is the latest in a slew of data supporting the growing momentum for LGBT equality. However, much work remains to make full LGBT equality a reality in the U.S.
