Marriage Equality Passes Hawaii Senate
November 12, 2013 by Adrian Matanza, Regional Field Director
Twenty years after the Hawaii Supreme Court issued its ruling in Baehr v. Lewin, beginning the conversation on marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples, Hawaii will soon join the number of states that honor the loving, committed couples who deserve the respect and protections that only marriage can provide.
Today, the Hawaii Senate passed the marriage equality bill in a vote of 19 to 4.
Senate passage was the last step in the work towards marriage equality in the Aloha State before it moves to the desk of Governor Abercrombie for signature, which is expected in the coming days.
This victory would not have been possible without the leadership of Senate Judiciary Chair Clayton Hee, who worked tirelessly to pass the Marriage Equality Act of 2013.
Are you a Hawaii resident? Please take a moment now to say "Mahalo" to Senator Clayton Hee for his leadership in this effort.
