Marriage Equality Law Takes Effect in Delaware

The Delaware Civil Marriage Equality and Religious Freedom Act of 2013 – signed by Governor Markell in early May – goes into effect today.

Committed gay and lesbian couples across the First State can now enjoy in the full and equal benefits of marriage.

HRC began working in the First State in 2009, providing critical financial and staff support to Equality Delaware for campaigns to prohibit discrimination and pass civil unions for same-sex couples. Alongside coalition partners, HRC played a key role in the robust field organizing efforts that led to the successful passage of both the Marriage Act and the Gender Identity Non-Discrimination Act earlier this year.
