Marine Corps Calls for Same-Sex Inclusion in Spouses’ Clubs
January 10, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Senior Digital Strategist
The Marine Corps has called on military spouses’organizations operating on base to admit same-sex spouses.
The orders come in response to an ongoing situation in North Carolina, in which Ashley Broadway, who is married to a female lieutenant colonel at Fort Bragg, was denied access to the Association of Bragg Officers’ Spouses.
Despite being lawfully married to a military officer, Broadway is not permitted a military ID card under current Pentagon regulations.
In a memo released yesterday, the Marine Corps commandant’s Staff Judge Advocate notes that private institutions are allowed to operate on-base if they adhere to non-discrimination policies.
