Mainers Uniting this Spring
April 26, 2012 by Karl Bach, Senior Regional Field Organizer
A lot has happened since I was part of the Equality Maine’s marriage campaign in 2009. In the last few years, public support for marriage equality in Maine has gone from 47 percent to 54 percent. The primary reason for this shift is because thousands of Mainers have been having one-on-one conversations about why marriage for same-sex couples matters.
I recently was able to attend an Equality Maine community meeting. Supporters of marriage equality gathered in Lincoln County to learn how to most effectively share why they support marriage for gay and lesbian couples in Maine. Participants in the training were able to practice talking about their personal stories and their shared values of love and commitment. Matt McTighe, the campaign manager for Mainers United for Marriage, has been on the campaign trail explaining why this is a winning message.
If you are in Maine, please visit the Mainers United website to sign the pledge to support marriage equality and to learn where you can join me at local events.
And no matter where you live, you can make a difference in Maine. HRC has set up a special fund – HRC Maine Families PAC – to direct 100 percent of your contribution to help win marriage equality in Maine. Together, we can mobilize the majority of Mainers who support marriage equality and win at the ballot this November.
