MAINE ELECTION REPORT: Rise and Shine and VOTE
November 3, 2009
After prepping canvass maps and materials until well after midnight, my team of amazing volunteers and I got a couple of hours of sleep before hitting the doors at 7 am as the polls opened. As we head into this historic day, there is a sense of excitement and responsibility as we fight to make Maine the first state in the country to defend marriage equality at the polls. Across the state today, hundreds of volunteers will knock on doors to ensure that every vote is cast to protect fairness and equality for gay and lesbian couples in Maine. Two of the first teams out (and the last ones to leave the office last night) are Merrill and Noppa, w
ho have been together for 33 years, and Lisa and Lisa, who have been together for 23 years. Both couples are fighting for their right to be married and have their commitments recognized as equal and legitimate in the eyes of the law. For months they have been making phone calls, knocking on doors, recruiting volunteers, preparing canvass materials -- anything it takes to ensure that Question 1 is defeated! We are doing this for Merrill and Noppa, and Lisa and Lisa, and the thousands of couples like them in Maine. Continue checking back here at HRC Back Story all day for updates on the Maine campaign and other critical races around the country. I will keep you updated. NO ON 1!
