Lynn Schusterman on DOMA Victory
July 1, 2013 by Paul Guequierre
Lynn Schusterman has once again used her leadership status in the Jewish community to advance LGBT equality. Lynn penned an op-ed in the Huffington Post on last week’s victory at the Supreme Court over DOMA.
In celebrating the downfall of Section 3 of DOMA, Shusterman said,
“I count myself among the millions of Americans, and the majority of American Jews, who stand for same-sex marriage, and I join with them in celebrating this historic moment. We can finally say that gay and lesbian couples will no longer be denied the basic federal rights that their straight friends are automatically granted when they wed. The decision represents a significant stride toward living out our nation's pledge to uphold liberty and justice for all.”
Lynn Schusterman, with her late husband, founded the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, an organization dedicated to advancing LGBT equality in the Jewish community, and across the faith spectrum. Last year, the Foundation partnered with HRC to publish the Jewish Organization Equality Index (JOEI), the first-ever index of inclusion within a faith-based community. JOEI provides benchmarks for gauging, and resources for improving, LGBT inclusivity policies and practices of North American Jewish communal organizations.
As the LGBT community celebrates last week’s victories and maps our path toward full equality, it is clear Lynn Shusterman is with us. Read her op-ed at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lynn-schusterman/doma-victory-a-huge-leap-_b_3512338.html?utm_hp_ref=religion.
