Luck of the Irish Gives Boost to Marriage Equality in Rhode Island
March 11, 2013 by David Contreras Turley, Associate Regional Field Director
I am very pleased to be on the ground working with Rhode Islanders United for Marriage as we continue to fight to pass marriage equality here in the Ocean State. We have had an amazing month with additional strong support from the faith and business communities and have had tremendous success in the field with thousands of constituents calling their priority Senators in support of marriage.
With St. Paddy's Day around the corner and a number St. Patrick's Day Parades this month, we are making sure to take advantage of all the community gatherings so we can talk to as many voters as possible as we prepare for a vote in the State Senate this spring. We were at the St. Paddy's Day Parade in Pawtucket last week, we were at the Providence parade this weekend and will be in Newport next weekend. The energy and excitement at this weekend's Providence parade was palpable. The parade was a sea of green with volunteers and supporters lining the route wearing our green marriage equality stickers. We recruited 35 new volunteers and had 84 Rhode Islanders call their Senators to urge them to support marriage for all families. I was so happy to see and have the chance to thank Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, and Congressman Jim Langevin for their support of marriage equality.
Momentum is on our side, following the strong House of Representatives' vote in favor of marriage equality earlier this year. We expect a vote in the state Senate sometime this spring. HRC is committed to passing marriage equality in Rhode Island, the last state in New England to approve marriage legislation. We are proud to work alongside Marriage Equality Rhode Island, GLAD staff and dozens of volunteers from across this small state with a big heart. Join us for one of our daily phone banks.
