“Till death do us part” is the vow that Don and Maxine Simpson kept when the elderly couple passed away merely hours from each other, holding hands until the very end.
Don, a civil engineer from North Dakota, met Maxine at a bowling alley. The two married a couple years later. During the 62 years of their marriage, they adopted two sons, traveled the world, and became involved with the YMCA and Rotary. They eventually settled down in Bakersfield, California.
Maxine was diagnosed with cancer years ago, but her condition worsened over the summer. Two weeks ago, Don fell and broke his hip. With both of their conditions declining, their granddaughter Melissa Sloan requested to move the couple into their family home where they laid in beds directly next to each other. The Simpsons spent their last couple of weeks together holding hands and looking at old family photos, according to People Magazine.
Maxine was the first to pass away. As her family was taking her out of the room, Don passed away too.
“He quit breathing as soon as she left the room,” Sloan said.
Don and Maxine had passed away only four hours apart from each other. The passing was a bittersweet moment for the family, who expected their deaths to happen together.
“I knew in my heart this is what's supposed to happen. Grandma and grandpa are supposed to be together and grandma and grandpa are going to die together,” Sloan told KERO News.
