Liz Mathis Wins in Iowa, Keeping Marriage Equality Safe
November 8, 2011 by Karl Bach, Senior Regional Field Organizer
It’s official! Liz Mathis will represent Senate District 18 in Iowa. With this victory, marriage equality remains safe in the Hawkeye State. Troy Price, the Political Director or One Iowa (http://www.oneiowa.org ) said, “One Iowa was so happy to work with HRC on the ground in Linn County, and help secure this historic victory here in Iowa. Together, we were able to send Liz Mathis to the Senate, and help protect marriage equality during the next legislative session. This was a great victory, but we must keep fighting to keep marriage equality safe. As NOM demonstrated over these last few weeks, they are not going to sit this next election out. We look forward to working with HRC and our thousands of members and supporters across the state to help protect and elect fair-minded officials, and ensure that equality remains in the heart of the heartland.”
HRC organizer Dominique Salice recapped her time in Iowa saying, “Door knocking farms in rural sections of the district put a whole new meaning to our ‘field work’. We left no door unknocked…even when we found ourselves driving miles between houses and when we were followed by farm dogs and the occasional horse.
As election day drew near, community members came from even the farthest reaches of the district to help knock doors and make phone calls to get the vote out. Some even wore black and yellow and went door to door while the Hawkeyes were playing. A true sign of dedication. We are all looking forward to seeing Liz represent SD 18 and protect a pro-equality majority in the Iowa State Senate. Liz’s victory tonight is not just a win for Iowa, but a win for the fight for equality.”
