LIKE ME Lighthouse: A Beacon of Hope in Kansas City
August 27, 2011 by Tony Wagner, Western Regional Field Director
Our trip to Kansas City for the “On the Road to Equality” national bus tour continued late into the night on Friday. After three great days of outreach and programming in Kansas and Missouri, it was time to celebrate and the folks here in the Kansas City area came out in droves. More than 700 people joined HRC Foundation and LIKE ME Lighthouse at Missie B’s to have some fun and raise money for a great cause.
The Lighthouse is a project spear-headed by the LIKE ME Foundation, a group led by Chely Wright and her aunt Char Daniels. Under construction and nearly half way completed, it would provide the LGBT community with a much needed physical community center in the city. Located at 39th and Main Sts. in the heart of Kansas City, we were lucky to receive a tour from Char and other member of their advisory council.
And I must say that this is going to be one special refuge for our community in the heartland.HRC Foundation thanks our friends at LIKE ME Lighthouse and Missie B’s for all their hard work and commitment to making Kansas City a better place for the LGBT community!
