LGBT Missourians Explore Adoption & Foster Care at Kansas City Event
November 22, 2013 by Alison Delpercio, Associate Director, HRC Children, Youth & Families Program
Last night’s foster care and adoption awareness and recruitment event in Kansas City, Missouri was a great success!
The Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s All Children – All Families initiative is partnering with Raise A Child, a Los Angeles-based non-profit organization, throughout National Adoption Month to host events to encourage LGBT prospective parents to provide safe and loving homes to children in the foster care system.
Yesterday’s event was hosted by Midwest Foster Care and Adoption Association, one of the leading child welfare organizations working with LGBT families in the U.S. recognized by HRC. Thanks to the leadership of Lori Ross, the agency’s director, and the hard work of Eric Charles-Gallo and the rest of the MFCAA team, a packed crowd filled Studio B in Kansas City, MO, to learn more about opportunities to foster and adopt.
Actor/comedian Alec Mapa (from ABC’s Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives) engaged the crowd with his simultaneously hilarious and heartwarming discussion of his experiences adopting his son from foster care with his husband in Los Angeles.
Following Alec’s talk, two same-sex couples who have fostered and adopted children in the Kansas City area spoke on a panel. They shared their experiences with multiple placements and the highs and lows of the process, as well as their advice to those considering this path to parenthood. The passion and love behind these families’ stories was inspiring.
Over 400,000 children and youth are in foster care in the U.S., and over 100,000 of these are not going to be able to be reunified with their birth families and are awaiting adoption into a safe, loving and permanent family.
The state of Missouri is caring for over 1,400 of these children and youth awaiting adoption. With the event yesterday, and its great work every day, MFCAA is helping to find families for these children and youth by recognizing the great potential within the LGBT community to provide these families.
MFCAA staff gather at the event.
