LGBT Issues at NBC News

Ed. Note: On Monday, HRC President Joe Solmonese and Deputy Communications Director Trevor Thomas traveled to New York City for an editorial meeting with NBC News. An update from Trevor follows below:
Invited by NBC News President Steve Capus, the Human Rights Campaign participated Monday in an editorial board meeting with top executives, producers and anchors of NBC News. The meeting was opened with remarks by NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams. Those in attendance included Joe Solmonese, president of HRC, Neil Giuliano, president of Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), and Dr. Marjorie Hill, executive director of Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC). The editorial board meeting, arranged by the NBC News Diversity Council, focused on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The meeting covered the important issues affecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, including HIV/AIDS. The goal of the meeting was to share ideas and offer insight on how to better cover LGBT families. As president of the nation's largest LGBT organization, Joe was able to offer his perspective on both state and federal issues. The meeting covered the importance of hate crimes legislation, employment protections, funding for HIV/AIDS, marriage equality, and the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, among other topics.
