Lesbian Wife of Army Officer Offered ‘Guest Membership’ in Spouses Club

In response to public outcry over its exclusionary policies, the Association of Bragg Officers’ Spouses (ABOS) has extended “guest membership” to Ashley Broadway, the lesbian wife of an Army officer stationed at Fort Bragg.
As Chris Geidner reports, the group’s president, Mary Ring, is offering guest membership “while our bylaws are being reviewed.”
The Association initially claimed that Broadway did not qualify for membership because she did not have a military ID card. Only opposite-sex spouses of servicemembers are eligible to receive a military ID card - something the Department of Defense could remedy by updating its regulations.
In response to this incident, HRC has called on Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to immediately issue new regulations allowing spouses and partners of gay servicemembers access to military IDs. The Department of Defense has yet to respond to the letter.
