Lesbian Parenting Film ‘The Kids Are All Right’ Earns Four Oscar Nominations

Post submitted by Michael Cole-Schwartz, Former HRC Director of Communications

The Academy Award nominations have just been announced, and the “The Kids Are All Right” is among the recognized films. Congratulations to writer/director Lisa Cholodenko and everyone involved with the groundbreaking film! Cholodenko and LGBT ally and HRC New Yorkers for Marriage equality spokesperson Julianne Moore, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role as Jules, spoke about their work on the film in the summer 2010 issue of HRC’s Equality magazine. The funny, heartfelt movie about a lesbian couple whose teenage children set out to search for their biological father was nominated in the following categories:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Actress (Annette Bening)
  • Best Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo)
  • Best Original Screenplay (Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg)

In the Equality magazine interview, Moore got right to the heart of the matter: “We’re all pretty much alike. Speak to anybody – two men, two women, or a man and a woman – about a long-term relationship and you’re going to hear the same kind of stories. I think that’s the most important thing about this film.” Click here for the full list of nominees, and don’t miss the awards show – it will be held on Sunday, February 27.
